In MY 2014, the feisty four-stroke hits the scene with a completely new, state-of-the-art engine that distinguishes itself from its predecessor above all with significantly more torque. Together with the revamped 4CS fork and the new frame, the new FE 250 is a winning bike that will set a new benchmark in its class.

The revolutionary 4CS closed-cartridge forks have been radically revamped for MY 2014 and, together with new fork springs and settings, now provide greater reserves against bottoming out as well as improved responsiveness. In addition, the ease of maintenance has also been improved. In combination with the PDS shock absorbers, which likewise impress with updated settings, they supply optimum damping behaviour specially designed for enduro use, with maximum traction and plenty of comfort. As ever, rebound and compression damping can be adapted (on the fork from the cockpit; on the shock absorber for high and low speed as well) individually to track and rider in no time at all. Settings on the FE 250 are identical to those of the FE 350 in MY 2014.
The wheels are fitted with lightweight, CNC-machined hubs and high-end DID rims, plus spokes with lightweight, aluminium nipples, guaranteeing the highest levels of stability while keeping weight to a minimum. The Michelin Enduro tyres stand for excellent traction and outstanding performance.
The lightweight, sturdy, aluminium silencers on the HUSABERG models are renowned for low noise levels while still delivering outstanding performance. The FE 250 is equipped in MY 2014 with an upgraded exhaust system for the bike's redesigned engine, with a new header and a silencer featuring twin-cone perforated tubes, thereby ensuring that FIM noise limits (112 dB(A)) can be adhered to as reliably as on all other HUSABERG models.
Brakes from Brembo are standard equipment on HUSABERG bikes and, together with lightweight wave brake discs, they are recognised as the measure of all things in terms of brake technology. A new handbrake armature has been developed for the 2014 model year, with new remote reservoir, smaller brake piston diameter (9 instead of 10 mm) and optimised lever kinematics. As a result and together with optimised brake pads, brake performance and application have been perceptibly improved again.
The lower triple clamp has been optimised in order to distribute force transmission from the triple clamp to the fork outer tube more evenly. As a result, the damping behaviour of the fork is less impaired by unwanted influences.
The cast aluminium swingarm has been developed with state-of-the-art calculation and simulation software and constructed, in terms of design and wall thickness, for minimum weight with optimum stiffness and sufficient flex. For MY 2014 model year, the chainguide has been revised for the benefit of greater reliability, while simultaneously reducing the weight.
Airbox and air filter bracket have been reinforced with fiberglass so that the air filter is kept even more securely in its intended position. The filter is replaced as quickly as ever, without any tools of course.
The lightweight, polyethylene tanks are equipped on the four-strokes with fuel pump and pressure regulator. The pressure mechanism for unlocking the bayonet filler cap has been optimised to make the cap even easier and quicker to open during hectic refuelling stops.
All HUSABERG models are equipped with extremely stable, tapered Neken handlebars made from a high-strength aluminium alloy. The four handlebar position settings are the tried and tested HUSABERG standard. Redesigned handguards made from ultra-sturdy, 2-component plastic have been fitted as standard for MY 2014 to both brake and clutch levers.
The new speedo developed in collaboration with TRAIL TECH impresses above all with its outstanding ergonomics. It is simpler to operate and easier to read. Moreover, the time is now shown additionally in every display mode.
A new, refined, 25th anniversary graphic design with clear, straight lines underlines the high demands made of a modern, state-of-the-art offroad motorcycle.
The tried and tested, integrated cooling system leads from the cylinder head through the frame triangle directly to the aluminium radiators made by WP RADIATOR. All 4-stroke models are equipped as standard with a fan system that has been improved with an optimised thermoswitch.
For MY 2014, our engineers have ignited the next evolutionary stage and developed a completely new, state-of-the-art DOHC engine that unites the concentrated engine expertise amassed from motorsport and development. The design of the new generation shares numerous basic components with the successful FE 350 engine. This results in a perceptible increase in performance, particularly in the low to mid rev range, which will make the new FE 250 a real headache for the competition.
The beating heart of the newly developed DOHC engine is the ingenious, redesigned cylinder head with twin overhead camshafts and DLC-coated cam followers. Compared with MY 2013, larger, flow-optimised ducts in conjunction with the more generously dimensioned intake valves (intake 32.5 mm, exhaust 26.5 mm; 2013: intake 30.9 mm, exhaust 26.6 mm) guarantee 10% more gas flow in the ducts and therefore significantly improved performance. The new camshafts have also been designed to achieve a perceptible improvement in performance and torque compared to the predecessor model, together with enduro-specific characteristics. An optimised water jacket ensures even better heat dissipation.
The stroke-bore ratio of the FE 250 has been defined as somewhat shorter-stroked for the benefit of better performance in MY 2014, with the new cylinder now boasting a bore of 78 mm (previously 76 mm), hence providing space for larger valves. Despite the larger diameter, the box-type, forged piston is now even lighter in weight. This reduces the reciprocating weight and enables higher engine speeds.
The crankshaft on the new FE 250 has a greater gyrating mass for the benefit of optimum traction and its stroke is 2.7 mm shorter than the previous year. It is equipped with a revolutionary plain bearing in the lower conrod eye. This means that the previous needle bearing is replaced by 2 press-fit bearing shells in the Pankl connecting rod, which run directly on the crankshaft's crank pin. The pressure lubrication system delivers the necessary oil supply directly to the bearing. This design enhances durability, thereby enabling an extension to the service intervals for the crankshaft - a benefit for the customer in terms of time and costs.
Thanks to a completely new design of engine case manufactured in a pressure die-casting process, it has been possible to significantly reduce the wall thicknesses compared with a gravity die-cast case. A new, flexible yet high-strength aluminium alloy ensures resistance to damage (stone impact, etc.).
To counterbalance the inertia forces, the new FE 250 engine is now also equipped with a laterally positioned balancer shaft that acts simultaneously as the drive wheel for the timing chain and the water pump.
Positioned behind the cylinder, the electric starter is well protected and connected via the electric starter drive in the ignition cover to the further improved freewheel on the ignition rotor. The new FE 250 engine is also prepared for a kickstarter.
The new FE 250 is now also equipped with the proven, further optimised DDS clutch. The one-piece outer clutch hub with primary gear is machined from a single piece of high-strength steel. This guarantees unbeatable reliability and contributes to narrow engine width with its compact, rivetless design. It also allows the use of thin steel discs, making the overall clutch package very compact. A diaphragm spring enables implementation of an additional hub damping mechanism - a benefit in terms of traction and gearbox wear. An optimised inner clutch hub improves the durability as well. In conjunction with the diaphragm spring, the hydraulic clutch actuation system from Brembo ensures very smooth and very precise clutch control.
Compared with its predecessor, a new 6-speed enduro gearbox, developed specially for the 250cc engine, has slightly shorter transmission ratios for 4th, 5th and 6th gears and excels with precise and easy shifting. The secondary gear ratio is now 52/13 instead of the 50/13 used previously.
Engine management system (EMS)
The engine management system from Keihin with electronic fuel injection and 42 mm throttle body ensures spontaneous, powerful responsiveness and handling, along with maximum performance. Automatic temperature and altitude compensation are state of the art. An oil-cooled, 196 W alternator provides sufficient power for the fuel injection system, lights, etc. A redesigned ECU ensures faster and more reliable data processing.
