The first round of the South African National Enduro championship took place this past weekend in the Baynesfield area in KwaZulu-Natal. A hot and sunny day awaited riders and spectators alike and many new manufacturers on the start line made for an interesting day’s racing.

Competitors had to complete the 42 km lap four times and were given a regularity time of 2 hours to complete the first lap, 1h 45min for the second lap, 1h 30min for the third lap and 1h 20min for the final lap. The loop included a 17 km special stage as well as a 5 km special stage that were both timed from lap two and would count towards the final result. As usual any late arrivals would result in penalties and would negatively affect the final result.

The WFO club had again put on a great show and a well organised event had everything in store for the riders: lots of forest, river crossings, some mud holes and rocky hill climbs and a slightly faster loop than the usual ‘extreme enduro’ style events made for a nice and flowing race.

Besides competing in The Tough One Extreme Enduro in January 2013, where Wade obtained a 12th position overall, and the Regional Harescramble Seeding event on 17 February 2013, which he won overall, this was Wade’s first National championship event for 2013 season.

Wade was more than ready to get the season underway on his new Husaberg FE 250 starting on row 2 and competing in the very competitive E2 (200cc) class.

He took some time getting used to his new bike posting a 5th on Special Test 3 and a 4th on Special Test 4.  He eventually got into the swing of things and posted a consistent 2nd place on the remainder of the laps except for Special Test 6 where he won. This saw Wade taking the overall as well as E2 class win for the day.

“I was pretty nervous at the start of the race as it was my first National race of the season, I was also on a new bike and the competition this year is tough.  I battled in the 1st couple of laps and crashed just after the start of the first special stage but eventually got into a comfortable rhythm.  I enjoyed the track and it’s always good to ride at “home”, some of the track I found a bit dangerous as there was a lot of long grass”.
